Jada Smith has revealed that she and husband Will Smith have been secretly separated for seven years. Married since 1997, both have no plans to divorce and are still trying to figure out the next steps in their relationship.

In an interview on The Today Show, on the North American broadcaster NBC, journalist Hoda Kotb highlights this moment in the book and the artist confirms the separation. “What surprised me the most was when you said that in 2016 you and Will would be living completely apart,” Hoda said.

During the dispute in which Will slapped Chris Rock in the facethe couple had already been separated for six years before the 2022 Oscars.

“We did some really hard work together. We felt a deep love for each other and we’re going to find out what that looks like for us.”

He considered filing for divorce, but never followed through. “By the time we got to 2016, we were exhausted from trying. I think we were both still stuck in the fantasy of what we thought the other person should be.”
