The singer’s mother Alessandro Pireswho is already under investigation by the federal police for involvement in an illegal mining project was arrested due to a “light cat” in 2019, made in his home in Uberlândia, Minas Gerais. Maria Abadia Pires was charged with theft and released after posting bail.

According to the newspaper article Extra on the day of the arrest, employees of the Companhia Energética de Minas Gerais (Cemig) allegedly called the Military Police to the home of the singer’s mother after discovering a clandestine connection. Maria Abadia was taken to the city police station, where she provided information on the case.

The company’s technicians said they went to the site to reconnect the power, but discovered that there was no consumption reading on the meter. This would constitute physical evidence of energy diversion, considered theft.

Singer involved in the operation

Alexandre Pires and his manager, Matteo Possebon, were the target of a PF operation, called “Disco de Ouro,” investigating a financing and logistics plan for illegal mining on Yanomami indigenous land. According to the PF, the project would have generated more than R$250 million.

Possebon was arrested preventively on Tuesday 5th in Santos, on the coast of São Paulo, after disembarking from the ship Alexandre Pires.

The singer would have received at least 1 million Brazilian reals from a mining company under investigation, and the businessman would be one of those responsible for the financial core of the crimes.

The singer’s lawyer Alexandre Pires issued a statement on Tuesday afternoon denying the artist’s involvement in illegal mining. According to him, Pires “was taken by surprise” by the Federal Police operation, carried out on Monday 4th, of which the singer was the target.

“The singer Alexandre Pires does not have and has never had any involvement with mining or mineral extraction, much less in an indigenous area. We underline that the aforementioned singer and composer is one of the most important references of Brazilian music, with a long and impeccable artistic career. Alexandre Pires was taken by surprise by the recent operation of the Federal Police which unduly implicated his name”, reads the note signed by criminal lawyer Luiz Flávio Borges D’Urso.

The singer’s lawyers add that during the investigation it will be demonstrated that Alexandre Pires “has never committed any crime”.

Opus Entretenimento, the company that manages Alexandre’s career, also expressed its opinion on the case. In a statement, he said he was “not aware of any illegal activity allegedly related to the company’s employees and partners.”

“In relation to Alexandre Pires, one of the great references of Brazilian music, Opus, responsible for managing his career, expresses its solidarity with the artist, trusting in his suitability and in the complete clarification of the facts”, we read in an extract from the text.
