The actor Samuel of Assisi has taken a break from his usual social media posts to denounce what he calls a “dismantling” of the University of São Paulo’s (USP) School of Dramatic Arts. In a video, the artist says that the administration has removed the institute’s identification plates and that students have been without lessons since March 4th.
Having graduated from the institute in 2006, the actor made an appeal to his followers and colleagues in playwriting. In his speech, Samuel de Assis spoke of a “desperate moment” in its 76-year history.
“The school is located within the ECA [Escola de Comunicação e Artes] and this week they removed the identification tags”, reported the artist. “We are without a teacher. There are students, there are active classes there, and they haven’t attended class since March 4, which would be the first day of the 2024 school year,” she added.
The actor, who last year played the protagonist Benjamin Go with faith, from TV Globo, also invited his professional colleagues to take a position on the case. In the post he tagged Luis Miranda, Isabel Teixeira, Edson Cell Phones, Vera Holtz AND Eliane Giardiniamong the other artists present.
Samuel’s appeal echoes the position of some classes at USP’s School of Dramatic Art. In a joint publication last Friday, the 8th, EAD students denounced the lack of signage with the new signage.
“This reveals the wholesale obliteration the school has suffered and the practice of shameless dismantling by ECA-USP,” the group writes.
The students further said that the management of the USP School of Communication was questioned and responded that they would cover the totems until a solution was found. For EAD students, the decision was not satisfactory.
“We demand the retraction and the immediate inclusion of the School of Dramatic Arts on the plaques,” reads the statement.
Predictions for returning to school
Wanted by EarthUSP’s School of Communication responded in a statement that the university has suffered a significant decline in faculty and administrative staff, which worsened last year.
“Five employees have requested retirement, reducing the number of EAD drama consultants to six,” the college said.
ECA-USP also stated that it had attempted to launch an emergency public competition to hire two new consultants, but an appeal lodged with the Public Prosecutor (MP) would have led to a delay in the hiring by the Department of Human Resources (DRH). The expectation, according to the institute, is that two new teachers will be hired by the end of March.

“The DRH is currently awaiting the parliamentarian’s analysis of Fuvest’s response to the appeal, in order to proceed with the admission of new employees. Only after this analysis will it be possible to proceed with the hiring”, specifies the note sent to Earth.
The ECA, however, did not respond regarding the alleged lack of signage for the School of Dramatic Arts on the new signs placed by the administration. The students responsible for the publication did not respond to contact from the Earth.
The EAD has been contributing to the training of actors since 1948. In addition to Samuel de Assis, names such as Matheus Nachtergaele, Marco Caruso AND Elisabetta Savala.
