The image of Jake Lloyd As a child, she was immortalized by fans of the Star Wars franchise. That’s because the actor, now 35, became famous for playing the young Anakin Skywalker when he was just 10 years old. Since then he has faced several mental health problems and was recently admitted to a rehabilitation clinic in the United States.
The information was provided last Monday, the 11th, by Jake’s mother to the American portal Scripps News. Lisa Lloyd She said her son’s mental health has been a concern for a long time. However, he says he is hopeful for significant improvement with the new treatment attempt.
Jake Lloyd has been in rehab for about 10 months. During this period he showed improvements socially, as well as following the therapeutic program without resistance.
Problematic diagnosis and treatment
In an interview, Lisa Lloyd recalled the moment she raised the alarm about her son’s behavior. According to her, the actor began confusing reality and inventing fictional scenarios while he was still in high school, around 2006.
“Jake started having problems in high school. He started talking about “reality”. He didn’t know if he was in this reality or a different reality,” Lisa recalled.
This happened well after the premiere of his most acclaimed work, Young Anakin Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menacereleased in 1999. Despite the success of the film George Lucashe preferred to abandon his acting career in 2003, before the first cases of mental confusion.
Concerned, Lisa took her son to the doctors so that, perhaps, he could have a proper diagnosis and treatment. However, what happened initially was a huge mess. This is because Jake was misdiagnosed with bipolar disorder. The right results came shortly after: he lives with paranoid schizophrenia.

“When they finally told him about the disease, he fell into an even worse depression. It was very difficult. He thought he didn’t need to take medicine because he wasn’t sick. I didn’t want to go to the therapist, because there was nothing wrong with him,” Lisa said.
The diagnosis of paranoid schizophrenia forced the actor to drop out of Columbia College Chicago, an institution he began attending in 2007. With the change in routine and Jake’s lack of acceptance of the problem, the treatment was disruptive. The actor often stopped taking his medication and sought out illicit drugs.
One of the worst news for Jake’s mother came in 2015. The artist was arrested in South Carolina while traveling alone from Florida to Canada. Police officers in charge of the case said Jake attempted to flee during a chase through several cities before crashing his car and being arrested.
All of Lisa’s attempts to contact her son were ignored. She did not return calls and her request for hospitalization did not proceed. “I talked to people in prison and tried to explain that she had stopped taking her medicine, but they didn’t give her medicine. As a mother, you tear your hair out because your child needs help,” she explained.
With his mother’s insistence, Jake was transferred to a hospital in California, but he continued to resist taking medication for treatment. He was released 10 months later, but the hallucinations continued. Lisa recalled that her son, after being released, called her and said that she had shot an intruder in her apartment, but it was all a creation of her mind.
Psychotic break
Lisa Lloyd says her son had a “full-blown psychotic break” in March 2023 after his younger sister Maddison died at age 26. The two were driving back to the family home when Jake turned off the car in the middle of a three-lane highway.
“The police arrived and asked Jake some questions. He was talking to them, but none of it made any sense. It was a word salad,” he recalls of the moment. Due to his mental condition, Jake was hospitalized instead of arrested. A few months later, he was transferred to a mental health rehabilitation center, where he remains today.

For the mother, the evolution of her son is clear. “He’s doing much better than I expected. She gets along better with people and becomes a little more social, which is really good. It’s like having the old Jake back, because he was always incredibly social until he became schizophrenic,” she says.
Regarding Star Wars, Lisa says Jake is still a fan of the franchise to this day. “People think Jake hates him, but he loves him. He really enjoyed shooting it and he had a lot of fun. I’d like him to get well enough to do something, and I’m sure he might want to do something. We’ll see,” she said.
