Opened in 2019, the space is located in an area designated for immigrants, refugees and tourists
The area with a privileged view is equipped with varied vegetation, sidewalks, benches, a small playground and a water fountain to quench your thirst.
“The name of this garden is a tribute to Marielle Francisco da Silva, known as Marielle Franco, born in 1979 in Rio de Janeiro, elected city councilor in 2016,” we read in a text from the Paris city hall.
“An activist committed against racial discrimination, for the rights of women and LGBTQ people, she proudly defines herself as a ‘black woman from the favela’. She was murdered together with her driver, Anderson Pedro Gomes, in 2018, while fighting against the abuses of military intervention in the favelas.”
The garden is located in a neighborhood known for its diversity. Traditional Parisians live there as well as many immigrants (mostly from former French colonies in Africa) and refugees. Thanks to the nearby stations, the place receives visits from passing tourists.
