The cartoonist, illustrator and writer Ziraldo Alves Pinto has died at the age of 91, creator, among other recognized characters, of ‘O Menino Maluquinho’. Born in Caratinga (MG), where he spent his childhood, Ziraldo has become one of the biggest names in children’s literature in the country. A designer since childhood, he graduated in Law from the Federal University of Minas Gerais (Ufmg) in 1957. In the 1960s he became one of the founders of The Quibblervehicle to fight against the military dictatorship in force from 1964 to 1985.

Ziraldo began his career in 1950, at the magazine Once upon a time…, and became responsible for a humorous sheet in Folha de Minasthe newspaper where he published his first drawing, at the age of six, in 1939.

In 1960 he also began working for Brazilian newspaper, vehicle where he published political arts. Also, around that time, he started writing comics and published the first magazine on Turma do Pererê. The characters Mineirinho, Jeremias, o Bom and Supermãe also appeared during this period.

Five years later, with other comedians, he founded the weekly The Quibbler, with emblematic arts and irreverent characters such as Graúna, Ubaldo and the Fradin. The artists Millôr, Henfil, Jaguar, Tarso de Castro, Sérgio Cabral, Ivan Lessa, Sérgio Augusto and Paulo Francis were part of the publication.

Ziraldo was arrested the day after the AI-5, discharged on 13 December 1968. On that occasion he was detained at home and taken to the Copacabana Fort. In 1969 he published his first children’s book, FLICTS, and a decade later, in 1979, he devoted himself to children’s literature.

It was then, in 1980, that ‘O Menino Maluquinho’ appeared, considered his greatest success and one of the major Brazilian publishing phenomena.
