Massacred for having acted, Faro cried when he asked Silvio for his blessing to play him

Presenter Record’s criticism of the film on ‘Homem do Baú’ reinforces the popularity of a living myth and the rigor of the public

“Rodrigo Faro targeted Silvio Santos and hit Chaves’ KiKo”, “This Silvio Santos looks like one of those parodies of Casseta and Planeta”, “Looks like the makeup Oscar is coming, huh!” , “Until then I thought it was just a meme”, “I didn’t want to say it, but now I’m saying it: it all seems very caricatural”, “Boy, what a bomb, huh?”

These comments were reactions to the YouTube trailer of ‘Silvio’, a film starring Rodrigo Faro, directed by Marcelo Antunez. It will be released in theaters on September 5th.

The script recreates one of the most dramatic episodes in the life of the presenter and owner of SBT, which occurred in August 2001: the invasion of his villa by a criminal who held him prisoner for almost eight hours.

In December 2018, Faro was on the “Programa Silvio Santos” asking for his permission to play him in the project.

“I’ve always dreamed of having a film to show to my grandchildren, and now that I have it I’m happy,” the communicator said in front of the audience. “Knowing that I will be represented by Record’s golden boy makes me even happier.” Rodrigo cried on stage.

Watching the film it is impossible to predict the verdict of the Man with the Trunk. It would not be a surprise if he approved of the show previously criticized on the Internet and the Mexican drama aspect of the released songs.

Moments from the 'Silvio' trailer: Characterization steals the show and distracts the viewer from the narrative

Rodrigo Faro had perhaps the most complex mission for a Brazilian actor: how to interpret Silvio Santos without falling into caricature? The presenter is a person and a character at the same time.

Getting it completely right – from voice to expressions to characterization to guessing what his off-air personality is like – proves unlikely. The possibility of making a mistake is much greater than a success worthy of the applause of the public, always demanding in following the biographies of idols.

At the time of the kidnapping Silvio was 70 years old. Faro was 48 years old during filming. Only Hollywood-level makeup could alleviate the obvious age difference. From the perception of those who watched the trailer, it is not convincing.

Another aspect against the film is that the scenes show Silvio as a person, at home, stripped of the burlesque image we have of him on television. It is difficult to recognize him as serious, in dramatic circumstances, acting coldly towards the criminal.

In the trailer Rodrigo conveys a certain intensity, however at certain moments it is not possible to see the award winner. The wig and makeup attract so much attention that it prevents the viewer from engaging in the narrative.

In recent years other actors have faced the same challenge: embodying the Silvio that most people don’t know. Among these, José Rubens Chachá (series ‘O Rei da TV’, Star+ channel) and Daniel Boaventura (film ‘Hebe – A Estrela do Brasil, presented as a miniseries on Globo). As expected, opinions were also divided.
