A New York University (NYU) is one of the leading institutions of higher education in the United States. That was there Lucason of Luciana Gimenez and Mick Jagger, graduated this Wednesday, the 15th.

The 24-year-old has been studying at the institute since 2018 and has now completed a literary arts course. Luciana Gimenez shared reports of the ceremony on her Instagram profile and was unable to contain her emotion: “I’m just crying.”

In an interview with Earth, Keyla Carvalho, of Fundação Estudar, explains that, unlike Brazilian colleges, which have a more direct selection process (the student takes a test, receives a cutoff score and is accepted to the university), in American universities it is more ” holistic”. The student can show more parts of their school, extracurricular and personal life.

“There are tests that may be necessary, but they are not the same as entrance exams. These tests are the SAT or ACT, which can be taken more than once by the student and are used to measure his logical and text interpretation ability. Unlike Brazilian universities, having a low score on this test does not completely prevent the student from moving on to a good university,” explains Keyla.

In addition to this evaluation, texts and modules are also requested in which the student can reflect on their personal path, participation in extracurricular activities and future projects. At this stage the student must also be able to explain why he would like to study at that specific university.

“In addition, universities also require the student’s academic transcript and letters of recommendation from teachers and school management. In other words, school grades and being a good student matter a lot,” the professional underlines.

For students living in other countries, like Brazil, for example, little changes. What changes is the need for proficiency tests, such as TOEFL, IELTS or DET, to demonstrate that you have a good level of English.

According to NYU, depending on the program you choose, you may also need letters of recommendation. These documents and information can be presented during registration on the University website, using online forms.

What are the expenses?

The process of application (candidate) can be very salty. Starting with the SAT, which is the most common standardized test, which costs around 103 dollars (R$ 512.86, at current prices). Universities may also charge fees for submitting documents (such as a standardized test score, or qualifying exam score, or the application itself). Some charge more than $100 to receive a student’s application.

But not everything is sadness. Waivers can be obtained for low-income students, although they are not always available. “In general, considering that most students apply to at least 10 universities and usually take the SAT at least once, it is quite likely that a student will spend more than 1,000 dollars (about R$5,000) in the process,” Carvalho points out .

Looking for scholarships abroad can also be a great entry point.
