Pastor defended by Regina Duarte and hated by the minister’s Bolsonarist allies

On Friday evening (21st), the Minister of Human Rights and Citizenship, Silvio Almeida, was received in the Baptist church of Água Branca, in São Paulo, amidst the embraces of Pastor Ed René Kivitz, leader of the congregation.

Other evangelical leaders participated in the meeting in a service with a strong political content. Minister Lula criticized the elaboration in the Chamber of Deputies of the 1904 bill, known as Abortion PL or Rape PL.

Pastor Kivitz is of the same opinion, against equating abortion with the crime of murder. “You have a selective ethic. They filter out mosquitoes and swallow camels. They want to put 13-year-old girls in prison who aborted after the 22nd week, but given the reality in Brazil, this is a mosquito,” he said in a recent report.

“Jesus is saying ‘you are filtering out mosquitoes and swallowing camels.’ Your streets are bloody. Your childhood is abandoned. Your poor people are starving and you are playing political games and playing for power, playing with human lives.”

In videos published on digital platforms, the Baptist leader called the evangelical group in Congress an “evangelical group”, highlighting the disapproval of representatives of evangelicals and Protestants in the country’s main legislative chamber.

Kivitz also criticizes believers who adopt a radical position associated with far-right discourse. “Fundamentalist religion cannot be supported. Legalistic, hypocritical, lying, inhuman religion cannot be supported,” he stated in his sermon. He opposes a “slavery, oppressive, evil, diabolical” religion and proposes an “encounter with the Lord Jesus” to fight “these human voices that try to control our consciences”.

Increasingly popular on the Internet and attracting more and more people to his services, Ed René Kivitz arouses hatred among Jair Bolsonaro’s allies and conservative evangelical leaders for his progressive worldview. He condemns, for example, “the violence that Bolsonarism has brought to Brazil” and defends inclusive treatment for the LGBT+ community.

In March the pastor gained a famous defender: Regina Duarte. On Instagram, the actress and artist, a fervent Bolsonaro supporter, posted an excerpt of her sermon and said she agreed with her welcoming and non-discriminatory vision of her. You also indicated the day and time of the service.
