Former Royal Staffer Recalls Princess Diana’s Early Morning Crisis

The former press secretary revealed that she received an emergency call from Princess Diana early in the morning before a major event

Dickie Arbiter, a former royal press secretary, recalled a complicated history with Diana. According to him, the princess called him at 5 in the morning worried about an important event that was taking place the next day.

The Arbiter served the British royal family between 1988 and 2000 and worked directly with the princess. In an interview with The Telegraph website, the former employee, who is 83, recalled the episode.

At that time, the book Diana: Her True Story was about to be launched and the princess was nervous about the repercussions it might cause. This was because the opera was about the end of her marriage to Charles and Lady Di’s mental health at that time.

Nervous, the princess called the Arbiter at 5 a.m. “Diana called me at 5 a.m. asking me what she should do [sobre o livro]. And I told her that we couldn’t cancel it now,” he recalled.

The former secretary, in fact, even advised Lady Di not to answer the phone in the next few days. “I told her to stay calm, not to answer the phone, and that I would accompany her to the next appointment two days later to keep people away,” Dickie said.
