What is “fart walking,” a fitness trend that promotes post-meal digestion?

Called ‘fart walk’ (‘fart walk’, in the free translation) it is an ally for those who suffer from gas, bloating and indigestion after meals

A new viral trend is taking over the routines of people around the world who seek wellness especially after eating. Called the “fart walk” or, in free translation, “fart walk,” the exercise after meals has become a routine for those who suffer from digestive problems such as gas, bloating and indigestion.

The term was coined by Marilyn Smith, a Toronto-based cookbook author who calls herself the “Queen of Fiber.” In a post on her Instagram, Marilyn detailed how the “fart walk” came to be.

“It all started 10 years ago. I suggested to my husband that we take a walk after dinner. When you eat as much fiber as we do, you can get flatulent. We walked, farted, and the ‘fart walk’ was born,” Smith wrote to her more than 100,000 followers.

The author further explained that consuming a high-fiber diet can help reduce the risk of developing cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

“As you age, especially after age 40, your risk of developing type 2 diabetes increases. Walking after dinner helps move blood glucose into your muscles, reducing insulin production, which can help reduce your risk of developing type 2 diabetes,” Marilyn added.

High-fiber foods, such as beans, lentils, broccoli, and cauliflower, can cause gas primarily because of the type of fiber they contain and how it is digested in the body.

Soluble fiber (found in oats, apples, citrus fruits, carrots) tends to form a gel-like substance when in contact with water, which can slow digestion and also contribute to gas production. Insoluble fiber (found in whole grains and cruciferous vegetables) holds more water and can increase stool bulk, stimulating bowel movement.

“This small daily habit can positively impact your long-term health,” advises Marilyn.
