Exactly 40 years ago, a character entered the lives of Brazilians and never left. Presented by SBT, “Chaves” became a true talisman on Silvio Santos’ network, to the point that, even when he was off the air, people didn’t notice him. He seemed omnipresent on the station.
Today, the series created by Roberto Bolaños has no intention of being revived, but it does not leave the public’s memory prisoner. The decision not to keep reruns on the channel came from the comedian’s son, who, presumably, has a project to modernize the franchise. Still, we miss it dearly.
In addition to the iconic episodes (who doesn’t remember the flirt with terror when he goes to the Witch’s house in ’71?), “Chaves” is surrounded by legends. Some swear that there are still lost and unreleased episodes, in addition to those already recovered by SBT years ago. The success of the program is so guaranteed that Multishow, the cable channel of the Globo group, even celebrated when it obtained the broadcasting rights.
As far as SBT and Brazil were concerned, “Chaves” would have been on the air for another 40 years. Every Brazilian family identifies with it. And they love to rewatch the episodes. The numbers don’t lie.
