Actor who left Globo soap operas for 7 years, re-emerges unrecognizable as a woman

In cinema, Luis Melo plays a transvestite and, in theatre, he questions aging and life changes.

Where is Luis Mello? The question comes to mind now, with the release of ‘Cara e Coroa’, in 1995, in the Globoplay catalog. It was his first telenovela, already a protagonist of Globo, in the role of professor Rubinho.

Established in the theater, the actor has made more than 30 works online. Among them, “Hilda Furacão”, “O Cravo ea Rosa”, “A Casa das Sete Mulheres” and “Amor à Vida”. The last character was the corrupt and prejudiced judge Gustavo in “The Other Side of Paradise”.

Melo remains under contract with the channel until early 2023, however he has not acted in soap operas in the last 7 years. “I suffer from ageism,” he told ‘VejaSP’ magazine. He will turn 67 in November.

Away from the cameras, but never away from the public. Since last year, the artist has been staging the show ‘Mutações’, by Gabriela Mellão, freely inspired by ‘I Ching’, a work that brings together traditional Chinese philosophical texts.

On stage, one of the questions concerns aging and the changes imposed by time on the body and the vision of the world. The show has already been performed at the Anchieta Theater, in São Paulo, and at the Curitiba Festival, the city where Luis Melo was born and returned to live after long seasons in Rio and the capital of São Paulo.

In June, the actor appeared unrecognizable in ‘Casa de Izabel’, a film directed by Gil Baroni. During the military dictatorship, men in drag – who occasionally dress in women’s clothing – gather in a mansion that belonged to the slave elite.

Melo plays one of the followers of this practice that is still the target of prejudice today. With wig, clothes, jewelry and heavy makeup, she does not resemble in any way the characters seen in soap operas. A great challenge worthy of critical praise.
