As he recalled, total loss of vision occurred at being hit in the face while playing football as a goalkeeper in a match between friends, at the age of 12.

“One day, while playing, I was playing goalkeeper. I don’t know why, I had never played goalkeeper before. And I would never play goalkeeper again. A ball hit me right in the face. From that blow, a hemorrhage [começou] and the rest is history,” recalls the tenor.

Even before the accident, Bocelli already had vision problems. He was born with glaucoma, a disease that causes pressure in the eye and can cause blindness, and has undergone several surgeries since he was three.

At seven years old, without being accepted into traditional institutions, the Italian began attending a boarding school for boys with disabilities similar to his own.
