In 2024, the group Maneuver completes 20 years on the road. Since the 2000s, much has changed, including the reality of the band members, Diego, Tales, Fernando, Felipe and Fabinho. From humble origins, today they speak calmly of the fact that, after years of work, they can enjoy a more comfortable life and support their family.

“I think that everything you work hard for and succeed in, thrives. Today we live in a reality that probably not even 1% of Brazilian society lives in. It’s a change that has changed my life and that of my family. We are not hypocrites, money and comfort are liked by everyone, I am proud of that,” Tales said in a conversation with the Earth. “I would be ashamed to say that I have been working for 20 years and I have no children. [no bolso]”.
Percussionist Diego also demystifies the idea that it is not possible to profit from reggae, as many think.
“Even as an incentive, sometimes people think that those who play reggae don’t earn money… in fact, they earn money. If you know how to work well and deprive yourself of certain luxuries, you can make it,” he recommended.

Not fond of ostentation, the members of the Maneuver They attribute their success to financial control and the professionalization of their career. For them, even though art is the most important thing in the work, it is essential to have organization and good administrative planning.
“Everyone has their part in the band, their job, it’s not easy. It’s for art that we do it, but it’s all organized, very down to earth and with a vision of the market”, continues Diego.
New album and troubles in Chile
Recently, the Maneuver has released his fourteenth studio album, Origin. The project marks the group’s return to original work after the success of the album Everything becomes Reggaewhich put the band on stage for the first time Spotify Brazil Top 50. With images recorded in Chile, they classify the trip as “work days”, but also as “fun madness”.
With a lean crew, they ran, sweated, and carried equipment to ensure scenes were well-lit. By night, despite being tired, they were getting good reviews. All the material was recorded in four days, a window between shows for the band, which ended up making it all challenging.
“It was all very complicated there. You don’t have a big team there and you can’t do everything. We were the costume designers, we took the suitcases, we opened the suitcases on the floor and there was no air, because the air there is very dry, it seemed like there was no oxygen. The weather was so cold that it was difficult to tie your shoes, at night it was incredibly cold, during the day it was incredibly hot, it was really a test and it was worth it. It was a very vast experience for us”, explains Tales.
Maneva is a democracy and it does not intend to stop
In good spirits, the group members acknowledge that they have had their dead ends and moments of “shootings, beatings and bombings” in these 20 years on the road. But nothing complex. To maintain camaraderie and family ties, they established a system: democracy.
“The nice thing is that we have an odd number, right? There will always be a winning team,” says Diego.
Fernando, from below, describes the regime in detail.
“We always ask if the other person wants it or not. If they say, ‘Oh, I don’t want it,’ but it was 3 to 2, the rule is: get used to the situation. There is always a contrary opinion or someone else and if not there is a general agreement, that’s it,” he explains.

Between one joke and another, the members seem not to have noticed that 20 years have passed since they started. The feeling, for many, is that time has flown by. Strong in a bond of brotherhood and successes, they do not see themselves stopping, on the contrary.
“Man, 20 years in the band is a lot, huh? It’s a long journey. I think that, between us, we really become a family, because we live more than with our families and our children. It’s a rush, to give the public, for those who listen, well, it’s 20 years and another 20 to come, with the same disposition as 20 years ago”, says Felipe Souza, guitarist.
