Maguila, the father of a gay son, went viral when he revealed his opinion on homosexuality

Maguila died at age 66 this Thursday, 24 years old. One of boxing’s biggest stars didn’t usually appear on TV shows.

However, in one of the exceptions, the former athlete went viral and the web saved the video in which he was asked about homosexuality.

In a long statement on a television program in 1992, Maguila preached respect for gay couples and contradicted even more widespread prejudices at the time.

“For me the ‘faggot’ man is not a disease, he was born with this gift of being ‘faggot’ and having sex with men”, Maguila said at the time.

In his speech he also mentions his son, who was five years old at the time, and says that normally he would explain to him that two men kissing would be a gay couple.

Soon, the statement drew praise from the LGBTQIA+ community. Son of the fighter, of the plastic artist Junior Ahzurawho is openly gay, was one of those who shared the video.

“I am proud to have a father who always accepted and respected me! More than a national hero, my father!” Junior said.
