The CCXP (Comic Con Experience) has become an award. The first edition took place on Friday evening (7/15) at Sala São Paulo, in the center of São Paulo, with a red carpet, tributes and a show. The event attracted artists such as Carla Dias, who received the trophy for best fandom, and Liniker, best actress in a series, as well as influencers and former BBB. The list of winners was, let’s say, a random spin.
In the United States, Comic-Con International (with a dash) has been awarding the Eisner trophy for decades, dedicated to the best of comics. And you can see that this was the basis of the national Comic Con awards (without hyphen). The comic was the object with the most categories: eight. By adding Literature, reading content won 10 trophies.
But Brazil already has the HQ Mix trophy, delivered since 1989, launched a year after Eisner in the United States.
This explains the inclusion of other categories. The second entry with the most titles was Games & eSports: seven. The third was Creators: Six. Both complement each other, as suggested by Pro Player and Streamer. Therefore, the CCXP Awards come as a combination of Eisner and The Game Awards in national versions.
But none of the original awards mentioned are known for attracting movie stars and former reality TV stars to their red carpets.
It makes sense that the CCXP Awards seek to “bomb” your award with a wider range of options that reflect your physical event. After all, the convention draws more attention for the new movies and series it features than for the release of comics and games.
Only Series had only four awards, including one international, and six Films, including famdom! And the standard has gone a long way from an MTV Movie & TV Awards, with fun categories. On the contrary.
The series has nevertheless received more pop, let’s say, with the highlight for the interpretations of Christian Malheiros and Liniker, respectively for “Sintonia” and “Manhãs de Setembro”. But with so many international releases, the “Succession” win was the least geeky option in the world.
The Film Awards caused an even greater short circuit, with the acclaim of two national documentaries of political relevance and an international drama about the historic anti-racist struggle, “Judas and the Black Messiah”, a great production, awarded with an Oscar, but … nothing like CCXP’s rich array of superhero, sci-fi and horror movies.
The audiovisual awards raise many questions, entering the heart of the CCXP Award’s relationship with the event that names it – and which has already proudly boasted as “the greatest pop culture festival on the planet”. Why, then, treat the film categories as if the CCXP were the Gramado Festival? With so many Brazilian directors shooting comics, horror and fantasy that would like to be awarded a geek award, why try to emulate a generic Brazilian Film Grand Prix?
And note the detail: the official CCXP Instagram has only published two posts on the result of the award, precisely with the winners of Series and Film, the least nerds of the entire evening.
It was the first Comic Con Experience awards show. And now we await the documentaries, dramas and Oscar-winning films, which among other things will be the highlights of the event (CCXP 2022) that follows this business card, scheduled for December this year.
