The actor Rui Rezende who conquered the heart of Brazil as the werewolf of ‘Roque Santeiro’, he has lived at the Retiro dos Artistas since 2019 and spoke about his decision to go to the refuge, located in Jacarepaguá, west of Rio de Janeiro.
Since his arrival, the 87-year-old artist has adopted an introspective attitude, avoiding interviews and interacting little with other residents. However, he decided to break the silence and share his local experience.
“Here I find reasonable conditions, because life is reasonable. Even millionaires, one day, will need help. I came here a little wary, with this idea of ’ah, it’s a mental hospital…’. But no, no It’s a mental hospital. Here I am surrounded by attention, I have my own little house and I can feed myself with books and films.
He also explained why he chose to live in Retiro. “It was a choice I made, also on the advice of my family, my ex-wife, the mother of my daughter, with whom I am still very good friends. They helped me come here, because the world out there is very difficult : You want to live in an apartment, but you have to pay taxes, hire people to help you. It’s a complicated life for someone who is 80 years old.”
On the Retiro dos Artistas YouTube channel, Rui retraces his television career, highlighting his most famous character: Professor Astromar Junqueira, the werewolf of the telenovela ‘Roque Santeiro’, which is replicated on Viva:
“I’m very happy to have played this role, because it was a very mysterious character. It was a very important soap opera.” His latest works include appearances in soap operas “A place in the sun” in 2021 and series ‘Good morning, Veronica’ in 2022.
Rui also commented that he had received invitations to return to acting, but was careful in his choices: “The theater no longer attracts me. I prefer an invitation to something that I really like. If it doesn’t come, it’s better not to do it. It’s a choice, today I can choose. The artistic activity that I like most at the moment is writing.
