Hollywood stars could end awards season empty-handed

Veteran actresses, with statuettes at home, see the rise of lesser-known colleagues, such as Fernanda Torres

Rarely have we seen such unpredictability in the Best Actress category at major North American film awards. The number of good performances divided the fans and, unlike previous years, did not produce a strong favourite.

The Golden Globes are proof of this: Fernanda Torres (“I’m Still Here”) beat four Oscar winners: Kate Winslet (“Lee”), Angelina Jolie (“Maria”), Tilda Swinton (“The Room Next Door”) and Nicole Kidman (“Babygirl”) – and the performer who pulled off the biggest “revival” of the season, Pamela Anderson (“The Last Showgirl”).

In fact, the surprise could be repeated at the Oscars: there are many deserving candidates for just 5 nominations. One step ahead is Demi Moore, another example of a veteran artist’s comeback. Academy voters love to reward those who have always been underestimated and, suddenly, surprise.

In the famous nomination betting rankings, stars such as Amy Addams (“Nightbitch”), Saoirse Ronan (“The Outrun”), Julianne Moore (“The Room Next Door”) and Regina King (“Shirley for President”) – the two first with the directions; the next two statuette winners appear to have no chance of getting a nomination this year.

The spread of votes among established actresses and the notable sympathy for less obvious names gives Fernanda Torres the strength to be nominated and have a real chance of winning the top prize in Hollywood.

Perhaps the Brazilian will repeat the path of another foreigner, the French Marion Cotillard, then unknown in the United States, who won the Golden Globe and beat famous competitors by winning the Oscar for ‘Piaf – A Hymn to Love (‘La Môme’ ) in 2008.

Fingers crossed.
