If there is one name that has been synonymous with sports programs in Brazil for decades, it was Leo Batista. The announcer, who died this Sunday (19th), aged 92, was the most notable voice of the genre’s attractions. Leo recounted the goals of the group, commanded “Globo Esporte” and popularized the unforgettable zebrinha on “Fantástico”.

For years and years – five and a half decades, to be more precise – the journalist was responsible for important reports at Globo and never gave up work, except for health reasons. With a career spanning 70 years, Leo was also involved in politics during the Getúlio Vargas government. He was currently one of the most senior employees of the station and Brazilian TV.

The importance of the presenter for journalism is such that it was his idea to call “Globo Esporte” by that name. Furthermore, he worked on productions such as “Jornal Hoje” and “Esporte Espetacular”. In recent years he has won several paintings that honor his story, which will continue to be immortalized by his voice in the memory of Brazilian football lovers.

If it were not for the flow of life, it would continue to mark generations. Retirement was never in his vocabulary.
