Pope Francis spoke to the Globe of death: “I’m not afraid; what God allows, it will be”

On July 28, 2013, four months after being elected Pope, Francisco spoke with the journalist and commentator Gerson Camarotti, of Globo and Globonews, in Rio. The pontiff was in the city for the World Youth Day.

When asked if he was afraid to suffer from an attack, as happened with Pope John Paul II, the Argentine pontiff rejected the concern.

“I’m not afraid. I know nobody dies the day before. When it happens, what God allows, will be,” he said, 76 at the moment.

Despite the appeals of the team that accompanied him, Francisco circulated through Rio in vehicles without special shots.

“I couldn’t come to see these people, who have such a big heart, behind a glass box. The two safety guards (Vatican and Brazil) worked very well. But both know that I am an unruly in this sense.”
