The Mask, Ace Ventura, Bruce Almighty…. If Jim Carrey has been giving us master classes over the years, there’s one title that ranks first in his filmography on AlloCiné. And according to our netizens, this is definitely The Truman Show, with a top rating of 4.3 out of 5 (over 1,400 voters)!
The actor, who was popular at that time for his dramatic roles, chose to take on a slightly more serious film this time. Here, he slips into the shoes of the lovable Truman Burbank, whose life is more than peaceful.
But sometimes he drowns under so much happiness and anxiety covers him at night. It feels more and more alien, as if the people around are playing a role. It feels like a watch… For those who haven’t had the chance to see this cinematic classic yet, and those who have waded through the spoilers, we’ll keep the irony quiet in these first few paragraphs.
What we can tell you is that The Truman Show is served by an intelligent and original script (with a critique of our consumer society), touching and moving. And this, thanks to a flawless performance by Jim Carrey – who almost lost – and the cast (special mention to Ed Harris): with a shocking ending that puts people at the center of the story, director Peter Weir offers a complete, controlled… and visionary film.
Warning, the following paragraph contains spoilers about the movie.
moving end
Anyone who has seen the movie knows that the final scene, which lasts almost 10 minutes, is one of the best of The Truman Show. After realizing that his whole life has been a lie, the protagonist, played by Jim Carrey, tries to escape. Weir then takes the boat scene, shot in the film with the vehicles recovering from the storm.
Truman finally reaches the limits of the studio when his boat is shot through one of the walls of the set. Then there is a disturbing conversation between him and the Creator (in the full sense of the word, because he only hears his voice, which comes from “heaven”) about the meaning of life. The hero hesitates: should he stay and live with this masquerade or go and discover the world?
Then he gives us one last show and takes a bow, in front of millions of viewers. We couldn’t have hoped for better.
