‘It’s the best movie in space’: James Cameron loves this sci-fi feature, rated 4 out of 5

James Cameron knows a thing or two about science fiction. His filmography is largely focused on the genre, from Terminator through Aliens in the Abyss and the Avatar films, with his third opus, Avatar: Of Fire and Ashes, hitting theaters on December 17.

“I was amazed”

So when this specialist director gives his opinion on what he thinks is the best movie set in space, we can take him at his word. And on September 3, 2013, Cameron told Diversity (Through Collider) What did he think of Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity, and it looks like he was smitten:

“I was blown away, absolutely blown away. I think it’s the best space photography ever made, I think it’s the best space film ever made, and it’s a film I’ve wanted to see for a long time.”

But what element appealed to him and made the film stand out in his eyes? He continues:

“What’s interesting is the human dimension. Alfonso and Sandra work together to create an absolutely perfect image of a woman fighting for her life in zero gravity.”

7 Oscars and colossal success

Gravity tells the story of Dr. Stone, a medical engineering expert (Sandra Bullock) on the first space shuttle expedition with astronaut Kowalski (George Clooney). But when an incident occurs, Stone and Kowalski find themselves in a space left on their own, behind the closed door of the immensity.

Rated 4 out of 5 by AlloCiné audiences and 4.6 out of 5 by the press, Gravity won 7 Oscars, including Best Cinematography (Emmanuel Lubezki), Best Visual Effects and Best Original Score (Stephen Price). It was also a hit at the box office, bringing in $723.7 million worldwide, which is a very good score, especially considering its “modest” $100 million budget.
