syntholmineral oil used by Valdir Segato, called il “Brazilian Hulk”, getting swollen muscles is a substance sold clandestinely in Brazil and has no medical use. If injected into the body, it can cause serious health problems and even be fatal.

Valdir died last Tuesday, aged 26, after feeling ill at home, in the city of Ribeirão Preto (SP). That day he turned 55. The man received medical treatment but did not survive. The cause of his death has not been revealed and it is not possible to affirm any relationship with Synthol.

The revelation of the use of Synthol to hypertrophy muscles and achieve the look that earned it the nickname was made in 2016, during an interview with the British newspaper. daily mail. He also said that he knew about the dangers of using mineral oil, but that he continued to use the product. His goal was to raise his biceps until they reached it 68cm in diameter.

Localized growth oils

Synthol is composed of mineral oil, benzyl alcohol and lidocaine, which has an anesthetic effect. Andressa Heimbecher, endocrinologist member of the Brazilian Society of Regional Endocrinology and Metabology of São Paulo (SBEM-SP), explains how the substance acts in the body and what the risks are.

“Injected intramuscularly, the oil spreads between the muscle fibers and inflames, causing the muscle to grow. I imagine it’s painful inflammation, like a benzetacil injection,” explains the endocrinologist.

According to Heimbecher, the substance is unregulated and, therefore, it is also difficult to find reliable scientific evidence about it in the medical literature. However, there is information on how Synthol and two other substances, hexylene and ADE, are part of a group called spot growth oils.

The use of these oils was widespread from bodybuilders, who used them to correct small asymmetries in the muscles. “Thus, some people have started using large amounts of these oils to generate inflammation in their muscles and generate growth without the need for exercise,” says the expert.

Risk of death

With recurrent muscle inflammation, the risks are serious. “It can cause death for several reasons (…), such as stroke, pulmonary embolism and heart attack. It is potentially very serious,” she warns. These risks arise when the substance enters the bloodstream and is counteracted by the person’s immune system. “There is also the risk of triggering an autoimmune disease from the constantly provoked process of inflammation in the muscles”, completes the specialist.

Even with so many risks, oils continue to be injected into the muscles of people who want unbridled muscle hypertrophy. These substances are trafficked illegally.
