The Globo presenter could go blind after the infection

Marcelly Abreu, a presenter at Globo affiliate TV Tribuna in Santos, was diagnosed with ocular cellulitis, a bacterial infection that can cause blindness. The 39-year-old journalist shared her state of health on social networks this Monday (13th) and has already started treatment with antibiotics to fight the infection.

The first symptoms appeared a week ago, on Monday (6), when Abreu noticed swelling and pain in his right eye. The presenter initially attributed the symptoms to a possible allergic reaction after consuming shrimp.

The gravity of the situation only became apparent after the journalist posted her condition on social media. “I posted [nas redes sociais] and clinics [oftalmológicas] everyone calls me telling me how bad running is for me. Total madness,” Marcelly reported.

The infection progressed rapidly, becoming a case requiring urgent medical attention due to the risk of vision problems. The situation has caused concern among the presenter’s followers and colleagues at the Santos broadcaster.

The Santos Department of Health released a statement clarifying that ocular cellulitis is not a notifiable disease. The agency also reported that the infection is not contagious, which reassures the population.
