Actor Tom Hardy (“Venom: Time of Carnage”) participated in the MAC Milton Jeynes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Open tournament in the UK, where he emerged victorious. The tournament took place last Saturday (17/9).
Hardy’s participation came as a surprise to spectators at the event and even to his opponents. Veteran Danny Appleby, who fought Hardy, admitted he was shocked when he saw that he would fight the actor. “Forget it’s me and do what you normally would,” Hardy said at that moment.
“I’ve participated in about six tournaments and been on the podium in all of them. But he’s probably the toughest competitor I’ve ever faced – he definitely lived up to his character Bane, that’s for sure,” Appleby said, referring to The Hardy’s character in “Batman: The Dark Knight Rises” (2012).
Hardy won all of his games and, at the end of the competition, received a certificate of achievement, given to “Edward Hardy”, his real name.
A spokesperson for the event later said, “Everyone recognized him, but he was very humble and was happy to take the time for people to take pictures with him. It was a real pleasure to have him competing at our event.”
This isn’t the first time Hardy has discreetly appeared in a martial arts competition. In August, the actor won the REORG Open Jiu-Jitsu Championship, a tournament that aims to raise money for military personnel, veterans and emergency services workers.
Hardy is also a director of REORG, a charity that teaches jiu-jitsu to people with severe injuries or suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.
In theaters, Tom Hardy will soon be seen in the thriller “Havoc”, directed by Gareth Evans (“Gangs of London”), without a preview date.
