The Jovem Pan News channel has decided to protest against the request for impartiality and the elimination of fake news from its news, ordered by the TSE during the electoral period.
Claiming to be under censorship, the company’s contractors protest with clown noses and read cooking recipes during their political analyzes. Ironically, the publication of recipes marked the pinnacle of censorship during the military dictatorship, which according to some network commentators was not so harsh – it only killed and tortured.
On Monday (17/10), TSE ministers granted Lula three reply rights to Jovem Pan. Thus, the PT was able to counter the claims aired on the channel that he was a liar, that he was not “authorized” by the courts and that he would persecute Christians if elected. In the decision, the body ruled that commentators do not reproduce these statements about the politician, under penalty of R $ 25 thousand.
In Tuesday’s edition (18/10) of the program “Os Pingos nos Is”, host Vitor Brown read a position of the station on the TSE decision: “Yesterday, in judging a right-of-response action promoted by the led alliance from the PT, the TSE, in response to a request from that party, decided to promote true media censorship, preventing Jovem Pan from addressing certain issues, even if in a critical or informative way “.
“Although we disagree, we will respect the decision of the TSE on the democratic rule of law. We hope that the values of freedom of the press and of expression will be quickly restored, as they are inherent and inherent in all democracies,” said Marrone. .
In practice, however, there was no censorship. Jovem Pan can continue to be partial and spread fake news against Lula. Since he doesn’t offer the other party, a requirement of any newsroom for budding reporters, he may just have to grant new replay rights. And if you can’t distinguish between facts and lies, set aside money to pay the established fines.
Some might even consider improving the station’s programming, as the week unveiled the culinary talent of Ana Paula Henkel, who taught maize flour instead of spreading already-denied fake news about an alleged attack on Tarcísio de Freitas in the favela of Rocinha. .
The difficulty of maintaining a balanced program is so great that commentator Zoe Martinez had to be removed from the Morning Show and the Coppola Bulletin went on the air. These decisions reinforce the broadcaster’s strategy of saying that it has been censored and that such an attitude by the TSE is an attack on the entire Brazilian press.
Other news channels, such as CNN, Globo News, Band News and Record News continue with their normal hours, maintaining the journalistic tradition of seeking balance and spreading only news, never fake news.
To express his indignation at the TSE’s decision, Jovem Pan released a statement, which can be read in full below.
“Jovem Pan, with 80 years of history in Brazilian life and journalism, has always been guided by the defense of freedom of expression and of the press, promoting the free debate of ideas among his contractors and guests in all programs of radio stations, on TV and its Internet platforms.
The fundamental principles of the democratic rule of law have always guided us in our struggle and in our contribution, as a vehicle of communication, to the construction and maintenance of the sacred Brazilian democracy, on which we do not quibble, we do not give up and we will remain in prompt defense, including the obedience to the decisions of the courts of justice.
What causes astonishment, concern and is a cause of great indignation is that precisely those who should be one of the most solid pillars of the defense of democracy are working today to weaken it and do so through the relativization of the concepts of freedom of the press and expression, promoting restriction of the free circulation of journalistic content, ideas and opinions, as underlined by the Brazilian Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters.
The Superior Electoral Court, contrary to the democratic principle of freedom of the press, the express constitutional provision of the impossibility of censorship and free press activity, as well as the decision of the STF in the ADPF 130 judgment, which also prohibits any form of censorship and as an obstacle to journalistic activity, it determined that some facts should not be dealt with by Jovem Pan and his professionals, either in an informative or critical way.
There is no other way to look at the issue: Jovem Pan has been under the censorship instituted by the Higher Electoral Court since last Monday.
We cannot, in our programming – on radio, TV and digital platforms – talk about the facts surrounding the condemnation of PT candidate Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. Regardless of the context, the Court’s decision is that these issues should not be addressed in the broadcaster’s news programming.
Censorship.
It must be remembered that the performance of the TSE affects not only Jovem Pan and his professionals, but all print media, by whatever means, that are intimidated. Right now, at a time when the free press is more necessary than ever.
As threats to freedom of expression and of the press are taking shape as a way to undermine our freedoms as citizens of this country, we strengthen and underscore our inalienable commitment to Brazil.
We believe in the Judiciary and in the other Powers of the Republic and according to the terms of the Federal Constitution of 1988, the Constitution of the citizen, we defend the democratic principles of freedom of expression and of the press and we make the most vehement repudiation of censorship “.
