Alec Baldwin sues ‘Rust’ crew over cinematographer’s death

Actor Alec Baldwin has decided to file a lawsuit against the crew members of the film “Rust” who he claims are responsible for handing him the loaded gun that ended up killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, shot by a bullet in the chest.

Filed Friday (11/11) in court in Los Angeles, United States, the action names gunsmith Hannah Gutierrez-Reed, production designer Sarah Zachry, ammunition supplier Seth Kenney and assistant director Dave Halls, who handed the revolver into the plaintiff’s hand, like the hierarchy of officials that led up to the incident on Oct. 21 of last year.

According to Baldwin, Halls assured that the revolver was a “cold gun,” not loaded with live ammunition.

In the lawsuit, the actor’s attorney, Luke Nikas, argues that Hutchins died “because live bullets were delivered on set and inserted into the gun.”

“This tragedy happened on a movie set, not a shooting range, not a battlefield, not in a place where there should be even the slightest chance that a gun contains live ammunition,” he said.

“More than anyone else on set, Baldwin was wrongly viewed as the perpetrator of this tragedy. Because of these cross-claims, Baldwin seeks to clear his name,” the actor adds in the lawsuit.

In an interview with ABC, Baldwin said he never pulled the trigger on the gun that ended up killing Hutchins and wounding director Joel Souza, during the film’s production in New Mexico. The gun would fire itself. But officials named in the actor’s lawsuit also denied being responsible for the cinematographer’s death.

In August of this year, investigators said they did not believe the gun was loaded with live ammunition “intentionally” or “with the intent to injure or kill.”

So far, the US attorney’s office has yet to say whether it will indict anyone in the case.

In February, the Hutchins family also filed a lawsuit against Baldwin and other producers of “Rust,” settling last month. She was 41 and left behind a husband and son.
