Actor Brendan Fraser, who comes off a lauded performance in “The Whale” and is considered a guaranteed presence at the season’s various awards events, has said he will not accept an invitation to attend the 2023 Golden Globes. The ceremony will mark 20 years of abuse suffered by a former president of the association responsible for the award.
He clarified his position in an interview for GQ magazine published this Wednesday (16/11), in which he recalled the harassment committed by Philip Berk, former president of the HPFA (Hollywood Foreign Press Association), which organizes the Globe of gold .
“I have more history with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association than I respect the Hollywood Foreign Press Association,” the actor said. “It’s because of the history I have with them [que não vou participar]🇧🇷 And my mother didn’t raise a hypocrite. You can call me in many things, but not like that.”
The harassment complaint took place in 2018 in the same GQ.
In a long article published by the American magazine, the protagonist of the “The Mummy” trilogy revealed that, in addition to the attention needed to take care of his autistic son, the harassment left him depressed and he even gave up on continuing his career.
In 2003, during a lunch organized by the HFPA, on the occasion of the Golden Globes, Philip Berk squeezed the actor’s buttocks and stuck a finger into it. “His left hand came in, he grabbed my butt and one of his fingers touched my perineum. And he started moving it,” the actor described in the post.
Fraser says the gesture left him paralyzed. “I felt bad. I felt like a baby. I felt like I had a lump in my throat. I thought I was going to cry.” He says he left the scene immediately and considered telling a police officer off the scene, but he felt humiliated. 🇧🇷[Isso] made me collect. She made me feel lonely.”
In response to the complaint, the HFPA said it had investigated the allegations and concluded that nothing serious had occurred. It would have been a misunderstood “joke”, according to an official statement.
Berk remained in the association until last year, when he was fired for spreading a racist email, amid criticism of racism faced by the HFPA itself.
Brendan Fraser took the opportunity to admit that only the #MeToo and “Time’s Up” movements made him feel ready to talk about what happened. “I know Rose [McGowan]I know Ashley [Judd]I know Mira [Sorvino] – I worked with them. I call them friends in my mind. I haven’t spoken to them in years, but they are my friends. I saw this wonderful movement, these people with the courage to say what I didn’t have the courage to say. Only I know what my truth is. And that’s exactly what I just told you about.”
