The designer and architect died on Wednesday the 16th in Sao Paulo Fernando Campana, 61 years old. The information was communicated through a note on the Instagram of Estúdio Campana, of which Fernando was the founder, together with his brother Humberto Campana.
The cause of death was not disclosed. “It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Fernando Campana today, November 16, in São Paulo. We thank everyone for their solidarity and ask that they respect the family’s privacy at this time,” the statement read.
Along with his brother, Fernando Campana has achieved international recognition for designing furniture and intriguing pieces. Together, the brothers founded Estúdio Campana in 1984, in São Paulo. For decades, they’ve been responsible for pioneering “disruptive design.”
“Deeply rooted in Brazilian culture and traditions, his work brings universal values, such as freedom and human dignity, to the center, creating his identity through life experiences,” explains the official page of the study on the brothers’ legacy.
Throughout their careers, Fernando and Humberto have always sought to incorporate the idea of transformation and reinvention into the creative process, elevating everyday materials to nobility. In the pieces they created, they tried to bring out Brazilian characteristics, such as the abundance and blending of colors.
Fernando and Humberto are currently listed as one of the world’s best iconic architects by Interni (2018). In 2015 and 2014 Wallpaper ranked them respectively among the 100 most important and among the 200 greatest professionals of design. In 2013 they were included by Forbes magazine among the 100 most influential Brazilian personalities.
In 2009 they founded Instituto Campana, with the mission of preserving the growing collection for future generations and promoting design as a tool of social transformation through cultural and educational programs.
About two weeks ago, the Luciana Brito Gallery opened the exhibitionPolyphony‘, by the Campana brothers, in San Paolo. In the exhibition, the legendary creations of Fernando and Humberto were presented under the status of works of art. The exhibition, which explores every room of the house, presented a heterogeneous number of creations by the artists, from the golden Cratera sofa to the series of tables in Cobogó, via the nearly two-metre Cocar vase and the terracotta tables.
