The actor faces up to 45 years in prison for rape charges against three women
Danny Mastersonknown for the TV series That show from the 70shad his trial overturned on charges of raping three women after the jury failed to reach a consensus on Wednesday, 30. The victims say the sexual assault occurred between 2001 and 2003. A retrial was due on March 27, 2023 and faces up to 45 years in prison, according to the order from Los Angeles prosecutors.
According to Variety, the jurors, six men and six women, said in a statement to Judge Charlaine Olmedo that they “are nowhere near reaching a unanimous decision on any matter and are convinced that that won’t change.”
The jury rep also informed the magistrate that he had received seven votes in the past two days and was still stuck on each charge. The decision was 2 guilty and 10 not guilty in case one, 4 guilty and 8 not guilty in case 2, and 5 guilty and 7 not guilty in count 3. However, to be convicted, Masterson would have to be found guilty at least two of the cases.
Originally, the jury had three full days to review the charges and sent the statement on Nov. 18. However, the judge said they hadn’t deliberated enough and asked them to come back after the Thanksgiving break on Nov. 24.
During the trial, two of the jurors tested positive for covid-19 and had to be replaced. The judge then asked for a new panel to start over and even then the decision was still not unanimous.
Variety also revealed that victims claimed Masterson would have had the support of the Church of Scientology, of which he is a member, rather than be arrested.
“However, we are collectively determined to continue our fight for justice, including in civil court where we allege that Mr. Masterson, along with the Church of Scientology, its leader David Miscavige and others, conspired to harass, harass and intimidate us when let us clarify Mr. Masterson’s actions,” they said.
The actor had his most notable role between 1998 and 2006, in the comedy series That show from the 70s, in which he played a young rebel. In 2017 the Netflix fired him after the case came to light, it was part of the series The ranch🇧🇷
