Oscar-winning film star arrested in Iran

Actress Taraneh Alidoosti, star of “The Apartment” (2016), Oscar-winning film for best international film, was arrested by Iranian police, a week after publishing an Instagram post expressing solidarity with the first man executed for crimes allegedly committed during the recent protests in the country. Several Iranians are protesting the country’s conservative politics after a 22-year-old woman was shot dead by police over a senseless detail. She didn’t put the veil on her head properly, leaving a lock of hair, which was considered an extremely offensive crime and caused her death.

Iran’s state news agency reported that Alidoosti was arrested on charges of “spreading falsehoods” about the protests. He wrote on his Instagram about him: “His name was Mohsen Shekari. Any international organization that observes this bloodshed and does not act is a disgrace to humanity.”

Shekari was executed on December 9 after he was accused by an Iranian court of blocking a road in Tehran and attacking a member of the country’s security forces with a machete.

In addition to the solidarity post, the 38-year-old actress also protested with a photo on Instagram, in which she appears without a veil over her head, a mandatory garment in the Islamic Republic.

Taraneh Alidoosti is one of the most famous actresses in Iran. “The Apartment” was the third film she worked on with award-winning director Asghar Farhadi, always in roles where she deals with conservative mores in Iran. Her most famous portrayal of her was that of the liberal Elly in “Finding Elly” (2009), whose disappearance/death precipitates a moral crisis in a group of friends. The film gave a lot to talk about and earned Farhadi the best director award at the Berlin Film Festival, as well as winning the Tribeca Festival, New York.

The announcement of his arrest is the latest in a string of arrests of celebrities, including footballers, actors and influencers, over their support of anti-government demonstrations, which have now been going on for three months in the country.
