The former couple reached a settlement after the actress appealed the decision in a trial that concluded in June.
Amber heard leave in appeal against the decision of the libel trial between her and her ex-husband, the actor Johnny Deppfinished in June 2022.
The actress was ordered to pay Depp $15 million, reduced to $10.3 million to meet state limits on punitive damages. The decision also says she owes her $2 million in damages.
After the decision, Amber’s attorneys filed a request for a new trial, arguing that the case was adjudicated in the wrong state and that the judges discarded evidence, such as documents signed by the therapists that allegedly attested to the abuse she suffered. actress.
This Monday 19, however, she revealed, through a statement on Instagram, that she had given up appealing after having made an agreement with her ex-husband.
“After much deliberation, I have come to the very difficult decision to dismiss the defamation case brought against me by my ex-husband in Virginia,” she wrote.
“It’s important for me to say that I never chose this. I stood up for my truth and in doing so my life as I knew it was destroyed. The vilification I faced on social media is a magnified version of the ways women are revictimized when they become protagonists,” he continued.
Amber also said she now “finally” has an opportunity to let go of something she’s been trying to let go of “for over six years” — she and Depp divorced in 2017 after two years of marriage.
According to her, the agreement does not mean that she admits guilt or denies having been attacked: “I have not admitted, this is not an act of concession. There are no restrictions or jokes on my voice in the future.”

“After much deliberation, I have made the very difficult decision to close the defamation case brought against me by my ex-husband in Virginia.
It’s important for me to say that I never cast him. I stood up for my truth, and in doing so, my life as I knew it was destroyed. The vilification I faced on social media is a magnified version of the ways women are re-victimized when they come forward. Now I finally have the opportunity to distance myself from something I’ve been trying to let go of for over six years and on terms I can accept. I didn’t admit it, this is not an act of concession. There are no restrictions or jokes on my voice in the future.
I make this decision because I have lost faith in the American legal system, where my unprotected testimony has served as entertainment and social media fodder.
When I went before a judge in the UK, I was tried under a robust, impartial and fair system, in which I was protected from having to give the worst moments of my testimony before the world’s media, and in which the court felt that I was a victim of domestic and sexual violence. In the United States, however, I exhausted nearly all my remedies before and during a trial in which I was brought before a court in which abundant and direct evidence to support my testimony was excluded and in which popularity and power mattered more than reason and due process. .
During that time, I was exposed to a kind of humiliation that I simply can’t relive. Even if my US appeals were successful, the best outcome would be a retrial where a new jury would have to consider the age of evidence. I can’t face it a third time.
Time is precious and I want to spend it productively and with purpose. For many years, I was embroiled in an arduous and costly legal process that failed to protect me and my right to freedom of expression. I cannot risk an impossible bill, not only financial, but also psychological, physical and emotional. Women shouldn’t be abused or bankrupted for speaking the truth, but unfortunately this is not uncommon.
By closing this case I am also choosing the freedom to devote my time to the work that helped me recover after the divorce; work that exists in the domains where I feel seen, heard and believed and where I know I can effect change. I will not be threatened, discouraged or dissuaded by what happened for telling the truth. No one can and no one will take it away from me. My voice will always be my most precious possession.
I would like to thank my outstanding Appeal and Original Judgment teams for their tireless and hard work. I want to thank everyone who has supported me, and I draw my attention to the growing support I have felt and seen publicly in the months since the trial, and efforts have been made to show sympathy with my story. Any survivor knows that being able to tell your story often feels like the only relief. I can’t find enough words to tell you the hope your faith inspires me. Not just for me, but for all of you.
Thank you. Soon”.
