Award-winning Iranian director Asghar Farhadi protested against the arrest of actress Taraneh Alidoosti on Saturday (17/12) after she participated in demonstrations against the Iranian regime’s oppression of women. The two have worked together four times, including in the feature film “O Apartamento” (2016), which won the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
Alidoosti was arrested by Iranian police a week after she made an Instagram post expressing solidarity with the first man executed for crimes allegedly committed during recent protests in the country. She has also been accused of sympathizing with Iranian filmmakers jailed by the government, such as Jafar Panahi (“Taxi Tehran”) and Mohammad Rasoulof (“There Is No Evil”).
“I have worked with Taraneh on four films and now he is in prison for his legitimate support of his countrymen and his opposition to the wrongful sentences handed down,” Farhadi wrote on Instagram. “If showing such support is a crime, then tens of millions of people on this earth are criminals,” she continued.
Several Iranians are protesting the country’s conservative politics after a 22-year-old woman was shot dead by police over a senseless detail. She didn’t put the veil on her head properly, leaving a lock of hair, which was considered an extremely offensive crime and caused her death.
In his publication, Farhadi took a clear stand against the regime, stating that he supports Taraneh and called for “her release along with fellow filmmakers Jafar Panahi and Mohammad Rasoulof and all the other lesser known prisoners, whose only crime is the attempt at a better life”.
Taraneh Alidoosti is one of the most famous actresses in Iran. “The Apartment” was the fourth film in which she worked with award-winning director Asghar Farhadi, always in roles where she deals with conservative mores in Iran. Her most famous portrayal of her was that of the liberal Elly in “Finding Elly” (2009), whose disappearance/death precipitates a moral crisis in a group of friends. The film gave a lot to talk about and earned Farhadi the best director award at the Berlin Film Festival, as well as winning the Tribeca Festival, New York.
The announcement of his arrest is the latest in a string of arrests of celebrities, including footballers, actors and influencers, over their support of anti-government demonstrations, which have now been going on for three months in the country.
