After the scandals of 2021, the way the Golden Globes are made has changed to become a more inclusive award
In 2022, the assignment of the golden globe was closed to television and the press, with only the list of nominees revealed and after we found out who actually received the awards. This was all due to the scandals involving the ceremony which took place in 2021.
The Los Angeles Times, charged the foundation on February 21, 2021 Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) own negotiation. Among the allegations raised was that 30 HFPA members traveled to France in 2019 on the set of ‘Emily in Paris’.
Two years later, the series in two categories, while more critically acclaimed shows like “I May Destroy You” were not considered for the awards.
The organization also had no black members. This was stated by Meher Tatna, former president of the foundation Variety that there had been no black members for at least two decades. Upon learning of the information, several Golden Globe nominees called for changes on social media, including Ava DuVernay.
According to voguebefore the 2021 edition, on February 28, the foundation made public its opinion on the information received by the public.
“We are fully committed to ensuring our membership reflects communities around the world who love film, TV and the artists who inspire and educate them. We understand that we need to engage members of color, as well as members from other underrepresented backgrounds , and we will work immediately to implement an action plan to achieve these goals as soon as possible,” he promised at the time.
The Golden Globe controversy is getting worse
In March 2021, the foundation hired a new strategic diversity advisor and pledged that at least 13% of its membership would be black.
But in April of the same year, the Deadline revealed that former eight-term foundation president Philip Berk sent an email sharing an article that labeled “Black Lives Matter” a racist hate movement.
After this event, Berk was kicked out of the foundation, but the incident further escalated the HFPA crisis. Therefore, new plans emerged in May 2021 and the promise was to diversify and propose restrictions on the gifts their constituents could accept.
But Netflix, Amazon Studios, and WarnerMedia announced they wouldn’t back the foundation until more dramatic changes happen.
What can improve this year?
In 2023, now that the awards are once again open to print and television, the expectation is that there will be more inclusion and improvement actions in the management of the event that warms up the films and series that could be among the Oscar winners .
Fans hope that in the cinematic universe the films: “Babylon”, “Everything everywhere at once”, “The Fabelmans” will receive at least one award in the nominations they received. In the universe of the series “Wandinha” and “A casa do Dragão” there are plots that viewers also want to receive at least one award.
