The scene of the Queen of Spain being ignored by the Iranian ambassador goes viral

The explanation of the gesture causes amazement in those who live under the rules of coexistence and the concept of equal in the West

The Royal Palace of Madrid hosted an important diplomatic event on Wednesday (25). King Felipe VI hosted dinner for ambassadors and secretaries from 126 countries.

One moment it generated international repercussions. At the time of the official introductions, the ambassador of Iran, Hassan Ghashghav, greets the monarch, but does not address Queen Letizia.

The diplomat just nods. He follows him with his eyes, in clear disapproval of his behavior and as if he wants to intimidate him.

The scene immediately went viral on social media and in the press. The representative of the Iranian theocracy was considered inelegant. TV commentators tried to understand the situation.

The explanation was given by specialists in Iran: since the Islamic revolution in the country in 1979, men have been forbidden to shake hands with women in public. They can only have contacts if they are family members and Muslims.

Even if traditions and cultures must be respected, the Iranian ambassador’s gesture arouses disapproval in the West, where the gender equality agenda is among the priorities of governments.

A former TV presenter, Letizia has already given some speeches with a strong feminist content. Defending women was born out of her personal interest: she has two daughters. The eldest, 17-year-old Leonor, is the crown princess of Spain and she is expected to take the throne one day.
