Nice or Big: How Scientology Ruined Tom Cruise’s Life

Tom Cruise is one of the highest paid and most famous actors in Hollywood. And he’s also the most famous follower of Scientology, a religious sect that in some ways made his life better, in some ways ruined his life.

Film career

Tom Cruise played his first film role at the age of 19 – in the film Endless Love (1981). The handsome actor was noticed by directors and producers, and his career rose sharply. In 1988, after starring in the movie Rain Man, Cruz became popular around the world.

In the 90s, he starred in 10 films, including “Interview with the Vampire”, “Mission Impossible” (then 6 more films were released), “Eyes Wide Shut”. In the last film, he starred with his second wife, Nicole Kidman, and shortly after filming wrapped, they decided to divorce.

Tom Cruise is inscribed in cinematic history as the performer of the role of a good guy who always saves the world from the bad guys. But is he really that good in real life?

Religious matters

It is common knowledge that Tom Cruise has been a Scientologist for 30 years. This teaching was founded by Ron Hubbard and was very popular around the world in the early 90s. It was then that Cruz, through his first wife, Mimi Rogers, joined Scientologists – and every year there increasingly believe. He lived with Mimi for three years (1987-1990) and broke up because he didn’t want to have children. By the way, Rogers herself accepted the faith thanks to her first husband, and after breaking up with Tom, she broke off all relations with Scientology.

Cruise went on to marry Nicole Kidman, who was initially tolerant of his views, but over the years Cruise began to distance himself from her. In 2001, they separated. One reason given was Kidman’s reluctance to renounce Catholicism in the name of Scientology. Another is the absence of common children. As subsequent events showed, both partners became parents, but already in new marriages.

After the divorce, Cruise dated actress Penelope Cruz for three years, and when they broke up, Scientologists decided to help her and found a new passion, which, however, did not work out.

Cruise then began dating Katie Holmes. She tried to hijack the actor from the cult, but failed, despite six years of marriage and a common daughter. She divorced Tom and said she finally felt free not only from him, but also from his beliefs.

At the same time, it is curious that in his childhood and youth, Cruz himself was a Catholic and even studied in a church seminary! But it is obvious that in Catholicism it is difficult to reach great heights, whereas in the relatively new Scientology Tom rose very high in a few years. This may be the answer to the question of why he still adheres to these particular beliefs.

Father or not?

Tom Cruise has two adopted children from his marriage to Nicole Kidman – Isabella Jane (1992) and Connor Anthony (1995) – and his own daughter Suri (2006) from his marriage to Katie Holmes. But there is a nuance: in fact, it only recognizes older children.

The reason is once again in Scientology. Tom’s adopted children willingly found their place in the sect, where the father occupies a high position. And when Connor decided to get married in 2019 and chose the same enthusiastic girl, Cruise not only approved of the marriage, but also banned Nicole Kidman from coming to the wedding. She hasn’t actually communicated with Isabella and Connor for many years, as she hasn’t started changing her religion.

Suri, 14, the actor’s own daughter, had less luck with his attention. After she was born, there were rumors that she was conceived with the help of Hubbard’s sperm, and not Tom Cruise’s at all. The actor, however, sued the author of his unofficial biography, who dared to make such an assumption. But that wasn’t the end of the matter.

After his marriage to Katie Holmes broke down, Scientologists told Cruz that Suri had been possessed by a demon. Since 2013, he hardly communicates with his daughter and does not have the right to meet her! However, neither Suri herself nor Katie are particularly keen on meeting Tom Cruise due to his excessive religiosity. Obviously, even if the actor’s film career has not suffered because of Scientology, things are not so simple with personal relationships…
