Singer Jay Z is the greatest rapper of all time, second board. The American, husband of Beyoncé, preceded Kendrick Lamar, Nas and even Tupac. The list reveals a Top 10 among the 50 greatest artists of the musical genre. The ranking comes to celebrate 50 years of rap.
Certain criteria have been established to list the stars of the genre, such as recording success, cultural impact, career longevity, quality and flow of lyrics, a jargon that refers to the fluency in the adaptation of words in relation to the rhythm.
The publication, one of the most respected in the world, stressed that the choice was made after much discussion. “It took a lot of deliberation and thoughtful discussion to come up with what we believe is a well-thought-out, authentic list that reflects hip-hop’s founding pioneers.”
Nicki Minaj is the greatest female rapper of all time, being tenth in the top ten. Missy Elliott, Lauryn Hill (formerly No. 6) and Lil Kim were ranked 19th, 30th and 31st, respectively.
No Brazilians appear in the list, since the ranking only considered North American artists. The magazine also stated that “reputable though his career is, British rapper Slick Rick is not on this list.”
