Christopher Nolan's historical epic The Odyssey will become available for digital purchase and rental on November 17, exactly four months after its cinema release.
The film starring Matt Damon was designed by the British American director as a cinematic spectacle intended for the big screen. The 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray edition will go on sale on the same day as the digital release, with standard Blu-ray and DVD versions launching later. Prices for the digital formats remain unconfirmed.
The November timeline follows the strategy Nolan used for his previous film Oppenheimer. That film ran exclusively in cinemas for 123 days before reaching physical and premium video on demand platforms in November 2023.
Box office record
The Odyssey has taken more than 1.4 billion dollars worldwide since it opened in cinemas on July 17, 2026. The figure makes it the highest grossing film of Nolan's career.
The film surpasses the director's previous record holder The Dark Knight Rises. The third and final installment of his Batman trilogy took approximately 1.085 billion dollars globally at the box office. The financial success has been driven by a widely known plot and a high profile Hollywood cast.
Homeric adaptation
The story is based on the Greek epic poem of the same name by Homer. It follows the legendary King Odysseus, played by Damon, as he undertakes a long and dangerous journey home to the island of Ithaca following the Trojan War.
The protagonist faces hostile gods and mythological creatures that test his humanity, bravery and wit, turning his journey into a legendary epic.
Anne Hathaway plays his wife Penelope, the Queen of Ithaca, who awaits his return alongside their son Prince Telemachus, played by Tom Holland. The two have waited a long time and guard the throne from numerous suitors.
Robert Pattinson portrays Antinous, one of the men attempting to court Penelope. Elliot Page plays Sinon, a Greek soldier and son of a servant to Antinous, who was recruited in childhood and raised to fight.
Zendaya plays the goddess of wisdom, war and crafts Athena, who protects Odysseus on his travels. Charlize Theron features as Calypso, a nymph from the island of Ogygia who promises Odysseus immortality if he stays to live as her husband.
Lupita Nyong'o takes two roles as Helen of Troy and her sister Clytemnestra, who is married to King Agamemnon. Jon Bernthal plays Helen's husband Menelaus, the King of Sparta.
John Leguizamo completes the main cast as the blind swineherd and loyal servant to Odysseus, Eumaeus.
