"Dallas," the landmark CBS drama about the wealthy Ewing family of Texas, will become available in its entirety on Prime Video in Spain starting September 3.
The streaming platform will host the full run of the American series, giving longtime viewers a chance to revisit the world of Southfork Ranch while introducing new audiences to one of the founding works of modern television melodrama.
What the series is about
The show, which premiered in the United States in 1978, centers on the fight for control of the Ewing Oil company. Behind a facade of Texan aristocracy and cattle-ranch wealth, the plot follows a web of corporate scheming, infidelity and cross-family vengeance.
The family's dynamic is shaped by rivalry among the Ewing heirs and constant interference from competing clans, with financial interest repeatedly overriding blood ties.
J.R. Ewing and the rest of the cast
At the center of the story is J.R. Ewing, played by actor Larry Hagman. His portrayal of a ruthless, manipulative tycoon with a cold smile turned the character into the definitive villain of his era and the series' main driving force.
Orbiting around him are equally pivotal figures: the fragile stability of Sue Ellen, the integrity of his brother Bobby, and the open conflict with the rival Barnes family.
A landmark moment in Spanish television
The arrival of "Dallas" on Prime Video also revives a distinctive chapter in the history of television viewing in Spain. The series debuted on La 2, a channel of Televisión Española, in May 1979.
Its broadcast was abruptly interrupted in the summer of 1982, right after the airing of the widely remembered episode depicting the shooting of J.R. The interruption was driven by the cost of importing the series.
Years later, newly launched regional channels, such as TV3 in Catalonia and TVG in Galicia, revived the format. Their local-language dubbed versions became genuine sociological phenomena that took strong hold among viewers.
