"Superman," the James Gunn film that relaunched Warner Bros.' DC Universe, will be pulled from the HBO Max catalogue in Spain on September 18, 2026, according to an announcement from the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned streaming service.

The film, directed by Gunn and starring David Corenswet, Rachel Brosnahan and Nicholas Hoult, opened in cinemas in July 2025 to strong reviews and box office returns, grossing more than $618 million worldwide. It served as the opening chapter of the new DC Universe, introducing a fresh take on the Kryptonian hero and laying the groundwork for the franchise that followed.

Deadline to stream Superman

HBO Max has positioned itself as the first place to watch Warner Bros. films from home, but that availability is not permanent. Barely a year after "Superman" hit theaters, the film is set to leave the platform's lineup sooner than many subscribers might expect.

The removal does not mean the film is disappearing from streaming altogether. It simply means "Superman" will no longer be included with an HBO Max subscription. Anyone who has not yet watched it has a little under a month to do so before September 18, when the only options will be digital purchase or rental.

Supergirl's rocky reception

The DC Universe's most recent release, "Supergirl," directed by Craig Gillespie and starring Milly Alcock, did not match expectations at the box office and stirred considerable controversy among audiences. Video game designer Hideo Kojima was among those who publicly shared his own take on the film. "Supergirl" is already available to rent or buy digitally through Prime Video.

What's next for the Superman sequel

Nearly a year ago, Gunn announced a sequel to "Superman" titled "Superman: Man of Tomorrow," set for release on July 9, 2027.

Images that leaked on social media suggest the sequel will revisit the rivalry between Superman and Lex Luthor, after Luthor's scheme to defeat the hero using a clone failed in the first film. The leaked material indicates that Nicholas Hoult's villain will confront the Man of Steel directly this time around.

DC Universe release calendar

"Superman: Man of Tomorrow" is slated to arrive between two other DC Universe titles. "Clayface," a horror entry directed by James Watkins and starring Tom Rhys Harries and Naomi Ackie, is due out on September 11, 2026. "The Batman: Part II" follows later, after Warner Bros. recently pushed its release back to February 18, 2028.
