Almost seven years after her divorce from Martin Freeman, his ex-wife, 49-year-old actress Amanda Abbington, recalled her experiences after her family collapsed. She spoke about this in an interview for the Full Disclosure podcast.
First there was a breakup with Martin, then the realization came that I needed to sort myself out, because I was a little confused. I hated myself. And many times in my head there were ideas how to commit suicide. I didn’t have to be either good or bad, I just didn’t need to be here among the living,” Amanda shared.
According to the actress, sessions with a psychotherapist helped her cope with obsessive thoughts about suicide. But a recent quarrel with her daughter again returned Amanda to that state.
It was funny because the other day I got into a fight with Grace because she couldn’t find her uniform and was late for school. In the end, I had to take her to school by car. And here we go: she is a girl, I am a furious and anxious mother. And in my head it’s spinning: “You can always kill yourself.” And that was my mantra. If you let people down and upset someone, or if you don’t act your best, or you’re a bad mother, or you don’t get ahead in your game, you can always kill yourself.
Amanda previously revealed that she kept her high-profile breakup with Martin Freeman a secret for six months after she and her husband simply couldn’t live with each other anymore.
When we broke up no one knew, we didn’t tell anyone except for a few key people because they had to know, because of hotel logistics and stuff. It took six months for this to go public, and a lot of it was during Sherlock… We were professionals and we were going to get along and put on a show and be nice to each other. We still get along very well, we still admire each other as actors … Martin is a great guy, but we just can’t live with each other anymore, Abbington said in an interview with The Sunday Times
Recall that Amanda Abbington and Martin Freeman met on the set of the movie “Only Men” in 2000. Together they lived for more than 15 years, and now they are raising two children: 17-year-old Joe and 15-year-old Grace. According to Freeman, parting was partly due to his professional success. The popularity of the actor increased after the release of the film “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”, in which Martin played the main character. After that, the successful “Sherlock” appeared in the actor’s filmography. In the frame, Martin and Amanda, who were already on the verge of breaking up, had to play Surugs – John and Mary Watson.
