Emmanuel Macron becomes the target of fake news after a wrong gesture during an interview
France’s number 1 enemy after imposing social security reform, lowering the minimum retirement age, President Emmanuel Macron went on TV to defend himself against the attacks and criticize the wave of strikes and violent protests in the country. What was bad for him got worse.
While talking to reporters, he hid his arms under the table, took off his flashy watch and placed it on a small table. You gave the impression of wanting to avoid flaunting luxury while most French people are raging at the loss of a right, as well as feeling the effects of unusually high inflation.
Despite being media savvy, Macron has made the mistake of the arrogant: believing he can manipulate the public. Naively, he thought no one would notice his tactics. He managed to draw attention to something that perhaps went unnoticed.
The Internet has not forgiven the gaffe. Fake news immediately emerged linked to the appearance of the French representative, a former banker with a reputation for being an elitist.
The “news” went viral according to which the watch cost 80,000 euros, approximately R$455,000, and the suit he was wearing was worth 5,000 euros, approximately R$28,000, while the average Frenchman’s pension is equivalent to BRL 7,000.
The professional press has discovered that the Bell & Ross wrist accessory has a much lower price: 2,400 euros (13,000 R$). Jonas & Cie clothing can be purchased for 450 euros (R$2,500).
The truth is unlikely to supplant the misinformation spread by Macron’s haters and political opponents. Going on TV to explain himself could have stopped his decline in popularity, but it had the opposite effect. He came to be seen even more as vain, snobbish, and conceited.
Here’s the lesson for anyone facing a public image crisis: carefully consider what to wear, what to say and what gestures to make.
President Lula’s recent long-winded slip of the tongue, with terrible repercussions in the press and on social networks, show that a little modesty and prudence do no harm to anyone.
