The infamous 84-year-old former king of Spain, Juan Carlos, returned home on Thursday, ending his two-year exile in the Middle East. From Abu Dhabi, he flew by private jet to Vigo in the northwest of the country, where he was met by his 58-year-old daughter Elena. However, the wife of the ex-king, 83-year-old Sophia and his son, 54-year-old reigning monarch Philip, were absent.
And today, Philip has already been seen at a public event, photos from which appeared on the official royal blog. He appears to have distanced himself from his father in a revealing way. Earlier this month, the king also did not meet with Juan Carlos during his official visit to Abu Dhabi, where he personally came to convey condolences on the death of UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. However, it is assumed that father and son will still meet face to face in Madrid next Monday.
It is known that Juan Carlos stayed with a former sailor and his close friend Pedro Campos in a house near the Galician resort of Sanxenxo. This is one of the favorite places of the monarch, where he often visited with friends and family in the past.
Recall that the departure of Juan Carlos took place against the backdrop of an anti-corruption scandal with his participation. In the spring of 2020, the Swiss prosecutor’s office launched an investigation into 65 million euros (according to other sources – 100 million), which Juan Carlos transferred to his girlfriend Corinna Sayn-Wittgenstein. According to the Spanish prosecutor’s office, the ex-king could have received them from the late King Abdullah and privatized during the construction of the railway in Saudi Arabia. The focus of the investigation turned out to be foreign accounts that are allegedly controlled by Juan Carlos I and issued to nominees. According to the prosecutor’s offices of the two countries, corruption funds could accumulate on them.
On August 3, 2020, King Juan Carlos, who had previously passed the throne to his son Philip, made a shocking announcement that he was leaving Spain forever. Two weeks later, the royal court published a message that the monarch now lives in the United Arab Emirates. And in March of this year, he wrote in a letter to his son King Philip of Spain that he would most likely never return to his homeland, despite the fact that the prosecutor’s office officially stopped the investigation. However, we see that his plans have changed.
Note that Juan Carlos also faces a possible trial in the UK for harassing his former lover, the German princess Corinne zu Sayn-Wittgenstein.
