Warner Bros CEO David Zaslav has decided to take on the entertainment industry and break with the Netflix model. “We don’t believe in movies for streaming,” Zaslav said Tuesday (4/25) during CinemaCon, a convention aimed at US theater owners.
“Movies [de cinema] perform much better when we bring them to HBO Max than any movie made directly for the streaming service,” added the CEO, who canceled production on “Batgirl,” produced for HBO Max, and passed several projects that would be been exclusive from streaming to theaters. To confirm his point, the horror film “The Devil’s Dead,” which was supposed to be released only on HBO Max, grossed $25 million this weekend.
Zaslav also pointed out that Warner had reduced the number of annual productions to just 6 features during the time of the merger with Discovery. And now it produces 16 films a year. “We want to make more than 20 [filmes por ano]. We are fully committed to cinematic storytelling for years to come,” the executive added.
For this, he hopes to be able to count on the help of movie theater owners. “We need to innovate the experience, focus on getting people into cinemas, in an environment that will continue to be contemporary. […] If we can do that, this industry will be stronger than ever.”
