Netflix will soon charge for sharing passwords; know when

Do you share your Netflix password with friends and family who don’t live with you? You may be willing to pay an additional fee for the subscription.

After releasing its financial results for the first quarter of 2023, the stream revealed the schedule that will change the terms of sharing passwords in the US and other countries. According to the company, the additional cost for sharing passwords will be implemented by the end of the second quarter (June 30).

Netflix doesn’t say for sure when Brazilian users will be charged. But, considering the information that the vast majority of major streaming markets will follow this schedule, we can expect that by the end of June, Brazil will follow the new rule.

Earlier in the year, the company said the change would occur in the first quarter.

The measure won’t end password sharing, but it aims to convert shared accounts into new subscriptions after streaming results have not been encouraging.

According to Netflix estimates, around 100 million households share passwords. By forcing the new charge, the company hopes to get more subscribers, or at least more revenue from the additional accounts.

We launched paid sharing in four countries in Q1 and are pleased with the results. We learn more with every launch and incorporate the latest learnings, which we believe will lead to even better results.

To implement these changes, we moved the large release schedule from the end of Q1 to Q2.

Netflix in letter to investors

Password sharing charges began earlier this year in Canada, New Zealand, Portugal and Spain. In these countries, the company requires users to set a “primary location”.

For Standard or Premium plan subscribers, Streaming offers the option to purchase an extra member. With this extra account, up to two people who don’t live in the main office will be able to create their own profile.

In Canada, the extra subscription costs C$7.99; NZ$7.99 in New Zealand; €3.99 in Portugal and €5.99 in Spain.
