Justice orders the suspension of Telegram in Brazil and the payment of a fine

The federal court of Espírito Santo ruled, this Wednesday (26/4), the suspension of the Telegram application in Brazil and the payment of a fine. Telecommunications companies Claro, Tim, Oi and Vivo, as well as technology companies Google and Apple, responsible for the PlayStore and AppStore application stores, have been notified.

The decision to suspend the app was taken after Telegram refused to provide the Federal Police (PF) with all requested information about neo-Nazi groups on the platform. The fine was also increased from BRL 100,000 to BRL 1 million for each day of refusal to provide the requested information.

At a press conference in Ceará, Justice Minister Flávio Dino confirmed the decision, explaining that the social network refused to comply with court decisions and that neo-Nazi groups were acting on the platform.

“The PF has requested, and the Judiciary has granted, that the social network that is not complying with the decisions, in this case Telegram, has a fine of R$ 1 million per day and the temporary suspension of activities, precisely because there are groups, called anti-Semitic fronts, anti-Semitic movement, acting in these networks. And we know that this is at the root of the violence against our children, our adolescents”, explained the minister.

Telegram forwarded the information to the PF on Friday (04/21), after justice determined. However, according to the company, the messaging platform did not include the phone numbers of members of groups with neo-Nazi content.

Judge Wellington Lopes da Silva, of the 1st Federal Court of Linhares, signed the decision, which said that Telegram only partially complied with the court order and that there is a clear intention of the company not to cooperate with the investigation into course. The decision ordered the temporary suspension of the activity of the instance and the payment of the fine.
