Prince William, second in line to the throne, will turn 40 on June 21. On this occasion, his face will appear officially for the first time on a £5 coin, on the edge of which will be engraved the inscription “His Royal Highness The Duke of Cambridge.” The image of Her Majesty is minted on the other side of the coin. Along with the main one, the Royal Mint will issue a limited series of collector’s gold pieces with the Duke’s birth year (1982).
Note that in 2011, William and his wife Kate Middleton already appeared on British coins on the occasion of the wedding, but their series was limited.
The image of William on the coin appears to be copied from a 2018 photo taken at the British Ambassador’s residence in Jordan at a birthday party for Queen Elizabeth II. The author of the work was the engraver Thomas T. Dougherty. The artist approached the process with great responsibility, paid special attention to the composition and shared with the press the intricacies of craftsmanship.
The three-quarter angle of the portrait creates a more dynamic image than the traditional side profile, Dougherty noted. Now, using technology, we can create incredible designs.
