Adriane Galisteu defines her year-and-a-half relationship with Ayrton Senna as a “fairy tale in reverse”. At the age of 19, when he met the Formula 1 driver, he experienced happy moments and was dazzled by life with the three-time world champion, but this reality ended abruptly with the tragic death of the motorsport idol in an accident on the Imola Circuit, Italy, on May 1, 1994.

With Senna’s death, Galisteu found herself without land, without money and without being able to work as a model, since no brand wanted to hire her, since she represented the mourning of an entire country. These are the moments he remembers in the documentary series Ayrton Senna By Adriane Galisteuwhich will premiere next Thursday, the 6th, on HBO Max.

I wanted to leave the series halfway through several times. Several times I gave up. I didn’t want to touch that wound, I’ve been doing it for years in therapy. Why am I going to strike again? I’ll stick my finger in and it will bleed. I didn’t want to”, says the presenter in an interview with Earth.

These wounds have not healed and never will. They are stored. These drawers were closed by me because I didn’t want to touch them and I wanted to forget about them. But we cannot forget. When I thought I was forgetting it, someone reminded me,” he adds.

The communicator would not even have started watching the series if it were not for the support of her husband, the entrepreneur Alexandre Iódice, who convinced her that the public is interested in knowing the story and that the ideal time was this year, the same year the series came out. Seinefrom Netflix, where the story of Senna and Galisteu had minimal screen time.

My husband was thrilled to make all of this happen. He is my floor. In addition to being the father of the greatest love of my life, he is my partner, he works with me, he helps me live every day a little better. He said, “Either you tell me now, or you don’t tell me again.” As a fan, as your husband, I ask you to tell me. Can you imagine that person who has never even seen you?’ I started to stop and listen to him and thought he was right.”

Adriane Galisteu and Ayrton Senna dated for a year and a half

The production is divided into two episodes, which revolve around the relationship between the host and the pilot. To tell this story, the production also relies on the testimonies of other people who lived with the athlete. One of the most important is Luíza Eugênia Konder, widow of the entrepreneur Antônio Carlos de Almeida Braga, known as Braguinha.

According to Galisteu, the series is also a tribute to Braguinha. It was the businessman who asked for his phone number on Senna’s behalf and was seen as a father figure by the driver. Furthermore, it was he who took Adriane to his home in Portugal, where she lived well for a year until she could resume her career as a model and presenter after Ayrton’s accident.

I wanted to include important people in Ayrton’s life, who in some way were very important in mine. I lost a lot of people in this process. Many of the people we live with never looked at me again. Those who in some way remained close to me, even if distant, but who treated me with respect, who took care of me, who helped me, are all there.”

Galisteu does not hide her apprehension before the documentary’s premiere and hopes that the public understands what she experienced in her youth alongside Senna, as she showed in the series a different version of herself than the one viewers are used to seeing on television. “It’s a very vulnerable Adriane. People have to understand this 19 and 20 year old girl. I don’t know what it’s going to be like, but I’m rooting for people to really like her. I did it with all the love in the world, with a lot of fear, but with trust in the professionals involved.”
