Justice in Rio ruled this week that the pharmacologist Maria Carla Petrellis pays R$ 38,600 in compensation to Caetano Veloso after calling the singer a “paedophile monkey” posted on Twitter in 2018.
The researcher’s comment was in response to a post by Forum magazine, who spoke about the blogger Flavio Morgensten, who was sentenced to compensate the musician R$ 120,000 for the hashtag #CaetanoPedófilo, which went up in 2017.
The decision was made by Judge Luiz Antonio Valiera do Nascimento, of the 39th Civil Court of Rio de Janeiro. According to the magistrate, “the statement of the defendant according to which she did not intend to offend the plaintiff cannot be accepted”. He also wrote in the sentence: ‘if by launching this nefarious label the defendant did not intend to offend, it is not possible to measure how she would express herself if she had such an intention’.
Nascimento also highlighted the high level of education of the defendant, who already holds a PhD in Health Sciences, to reject the hypothesis that Maria Carla could not reduce the offensive content of her publications on social networks. According to the judge, she “was irritated when she read a publication in Revista Fórum about the author’s procedural discussion with the writer Olavo de Carvalho, with whom she shares ideological understandings.”
